Volunteering to drive his girl friend's son home for Thanksgiving to Chicago from his boarding school in Georgia, little does Dutch expect the picaresque adventures in store for him. When a blunt, down-to-earth construction worker takes to the road with an insufferable twelve-year-old snob (desperately insecure under the surface) who doesn't approve of him in the least, quite a bit must happen before they can reach their destination as friends-- or, for that matter, get home at all.
故事梗概：
和丈夫离婚后，娜塔丽认识了卡车司机达奇。假期马上就要到了，由于娜塔丽的前夫瑞德要到伦敦开会，娜塔丽决定由达奇到千里之外的寄宿学校接儿子道尔回家。
道尔聪明、身手敏捷，但却有些自闭。对于父亲不能来接自己回家，道尔感到很沮丧。但他宁愿一个人呆在空荡荡的学校里，也不愿意和一个卡车司机回家。
达奇刚到学校道尔就给了他一个下马威。道尔用空手道将达奇掀翻在地，这下可惹恼了达奇，他强行将道尔带到车上，向家的方向开去。
为了完成女友交给的任务，和道尔和睦相处，达奇想出很多办法。他买来焰火逗道尔开心，但道尔却并不领情，还用烟头烧坏了达奇的裤子。达奇一怒之下把道尔仍在了路边，独自开车来到了汽车旅馆。
饥寒交迫的道尔找到了达奇，为了报复他，道尔打着了汽车并开上了路。一辆卡车将达奇的车撞得面目全非，看着达奇在报废的汽车周围焦急地寻找自己，道尔心中闪过一丝愧疚。
汽车没有了，道尔和达奇只能搭车回家。在达奇的启发下，道尔装成患病儿童，博得了两位女士的同情。但上车之后他们才发现这两位女士竟是应召女郎。情窦初开的道尔对她们其中的一个颇有好感，但达奇知道决不能再和这两个女人坐一辆车，这将给道尔造成很不好的影响。
应召女郎趁给车加油抛下了达奇和道尔，却带走了他们的行李钱物。这下达奇和道尔身无分文，要回家真成了大难题。无奈之下两人来到了收容所，在这里的人们的帮助下，才回到了家中。
经历了这一路的风风雨雨，道尔接受了达奇，甚至发现自己已经离不开他了。道尔相信他将和达奇一同度过一个美好的假期。

本片讲述了卡车司机达奇为了在假期将女友的捣蛋儿子带回家，一路上与这个人小鬼大的孩子斗智斗勇的故事。影片诙谐幽默，充满温馨。片中一些与孩子相处的方式方法也为观看影片的大人们提供了很好的参考。
影片的导演彼得·费曼近年来并没有什么大片问世，但八十年代他导演的一部没有大明星参演的影片《鳄鱼邓肯》却取得了意想不到的效果，至今仍历历在目。影片的男主演艾德·奥尼尔曾主演过《反斗智多星》、《神秘拼图》等影片，他在本片中的表演张弛有度，十分到位。
